Germany Coach Flick Explains Gosens Exclusion from World Cup

Germany coach Hansi Flick has revealed why Robin Gosens was left out of the nation’s 26-man World Cup squad for Qatar 2022. The Inter wingback has suffered from constant game time due to recurring injuries, being touted for a move away from the Nerazzurri with Bundesliga clubs, especially Bayer Leverkusen interested in luring him.

Speaking in a press conference (via FCInterNews), the ex-Bayern Munich manager shed light on Gosens’ exclusion from the national team, citing that the fullback himself would understand why such a decision was taken.

“Robin Gosens made very few appearances last year, I think he himself can understand very well why we took this decision.”

He was chosen ahead of RB Leipzig’s David Raum and Freiburg’s Christian Gunter – both developing leaps and bounds with their performances in the Bundesliga.

“It has nothing to do with his qualities, but with the pace of the match. Both Raum and Günter are doing well in their clubs.”

The 28-year-old has played just 26 times for Inter since joining them from Atalanta the previous winter transfer window. He will miss his shot at a first World Cup, where Germany play Japan first in the group stages, before taking on Spain and Costa Rica.
