Inter and Germany Legend Brehme Passes Away at Age 63

Inter and Germany icon Andy Brehme has died at 63 due to a cardiac arrest. He was residing in Munich and was rushed to the Ziemstrasse clinic during the night, but the attempts to resuscitate him were in vain, Bild informs.

The legendary fullback was an integral part of one of the best squads in the history of the Nerazzurri. He collected 116 appearances with them from 1988 to 1992, contributing to winning one Scudetto, one Supercoppa Italia, and one UEFA Cup.

In 1988/1989, Inter notched a record tally by picking up 58 points in 34 matches when wins were worth only two points. With Giovanni Trapattoni on their bench, they left Napoli, Milan, and Juventus in the dust despite their stacked teams. The Partenopei could count on Diego Armando Maradona, while the Rossoneri on the Dutch trio.

Brehme got the better of El Pipe de Oro also during the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where Germany defeated Argentina in the final and he converted a key penalty kick. He spent most of his career at Kaiserslautern in two separate spells, between 1981 and 1986 and then in its twilight from 1993 to 1988. He also played for Bayern Munich for three seasons. Despite his role, he scored over 100 goals thanks to his incredible pace and tactical savviness.

On top of the Scudetto, he won the Bundesliga twice and the DFB-Pokal and the DFL-Supercup once. He was a linchpin of his national team before and after the German reunification.
