Inter Outbidding Milan, Optimistic About Signing Soon-to-Be Free Agent

Inter are making a serious attempt to put Hakan Calhanoglu under contract. More details are emerging after the first report about their push transpired Sunday. The Nerazzurri are willing to give the Turk €5M per year including bonuses, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports. They are confident they will be able to reach an agreement soon, Gianluca Di Marzio informed.

Milan so far never improved the €4M salary they offered a while back. It remains to be seen whether they will do it now facing the competition from their cross-town rivals. Inter are looking to add a midfielder with those traits given the uncertainty about Christian Eriksen’s future.

They had preliminary talks to reunite Simone Inzaghi with Luis Alberto. However, the price tag for the Spaniard is high, and Lazio drive a hard bargain. Calhanoglu would be significantly more sustainable for their finances. His rich deal would be offset by the departure of Radja Nainggolan, who is again close to Cagliari, and other cuts.

Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta completed multiple Bosman moves during his time with Juventus. In this case, he would also fill a significant technical need on top of the advantageous economic aspects. With Turkey’s Euro being already over, Calhanoglu should soon make a decision about his future. His performances in the tournament certainly did not fuel his demands as he hoped. He has received a sizeable proposal from Al-Duhail but will likely prioritize European destinations. The other top clubs that have him on their radars have not made concrete moves yet.

UPDATE: Calhanoglu confirmed that he will switch side of the Navigli talking to Ibrahim Kirkayak of TRT Sport: “I have come to terms Inter. I will travel to Milan tomorrow to put pen-to-paper.”
