Lazio to Try Again to Extend Milinkovic-Savic Contract

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic scored once in Qatar, but Serbia bowed out early, and his other showings weren’t particularly glitzy. Lazio were left disappointed if they hoped that the World Cup showcase would drive up his price tag and attract more suitors. But their priority has always been to strike a deal on a new contract rather than selling him, Sky relays.

While his agent Mateja Kezman is seeking offers, the Biancocelesti are preparing a new proposal. It will smash the €5M threshold, including add-ons. He’d be by far the highest-paid player on the roster. The ace has been routinely linked to Juventus and Real Madrid.

According to the publication, Milinkovic-Savic isn’t considering penning an extension at this stage, as he’d like to depart in the summer. But the situation could still change, also depending on how the transfer market evolves.

President Claudio Lotito weighed in on the matter lately (via Corriere dello Sport).

“Contracts have to be renewed when they are close to expiring. Technically speaking, we have an interest in doing so because he’s a great player and man. I hope he’s on the same page. He’s somebody we lean on. But everything has a beginning and an end in life.”

Our Take on Milinkovic-Savic

While the signals are pointing toward an exit at the end of the season, the star may do his team a solid, agreeing to a new contract containing a reasonable release clause. It would avoid lengthy sagas and give the club a proper justification for the sale. The tricky part is coming to terms on its amount, though. It can’t possibly be €100M, but €50/60M might satisfy everybody involved, including the prospective buyers.
