Mancini Talks Zaniolo, Gnonto, and Upcoming Challenges

Italy will be back on the pitch in late March, as they will face England in a Euro 2024 qualifying match. Coach Roberto Mancini took stock of recent events and looked ahead in an interview with Sky.

“We recaptured the right enthusiasm. Our goal isn’t just to win the Nations League in June but to do our best in all competitions. We want to bring the World Cup back to Italy. The clash with the Three Lions will be tough. It’ll be paramount to get off to a good start.”

Mancini is pleased with how Serie A teams are faring in Europe.

“It’s true, but they don’t field many Italians, and that’s an issue for us. We have to find some solutions. It’s time for our clubs to have deep runs and win some cups. It would be beneficial to our movement.”

The gaffer addressed some players.

“Federico Chiesa didn’t play in much in the Derby but, after that kind of injury, you usually restart well and then you have a dip. He’s essential for us. The spell in Turkey could help Nicolò Zaniolo. He’s young, and it might be a meaningful experience. He joined a great team like Galatasaray, and he’ll be back with us when he features regularly. Leonardo Bonucci seems fit, but he hasn’t logged big minutes in a while. We hope Giacomo Raspadori recovers and stars more consistently. He has become key for us.”

Mancini closed with some remarks about Willy Gnonto.

“He’s a youngster that had trouble breaking out in Italy and nobody wanted to sign, but he’s a starter in the Premier League now. It shouldn’t be taken for granted. Others should follow his example and go abroad.”
