Milan Icon Backs Leao to Take Up Captain’s Responsibility

Former Rossoneri icon Demetrio Albertini has backed Rafael Leao to succeed as the club’s captain in the future. According to Albertini, expectations placed on the Portuguese winger’s head put him in a position of great responsibility.

Speaking to Sky Italia (via MilanNews) on the occasion of the Cupra Ghost Padel event, the former Rossoneri midfielder spoke specifically about Leao’s captaincy chances.

“Leao as captain? A lot is always expected from him, you have to be mature and responsible on every occasion to get the armband. It can certainly be a reason for him to grow and have continuity not only on the pitch but also off it.”

Leao captained Milan for the first time in his career in the win against Hellas Verona at San Siro. He was solely responsible for the victory, as he netted the winner with a solo first-half strike.

With both Davide Calabria and Theo Hernandez ruled out of the clash, Stefano Pioli chose Leao to hand the responsibility over of the captain’s armband. Milan face Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari away next as they seek to close the gap with local rivals Inter atop the Serie A table.
