Napoli Icon Hamšík Names Inter as Contenders, Praises Sarri

Marek Hamšík has named Inter as concrete title contenders to rival Napoli in the race for the Scudetto. The Partenopei recently tasted their maiden defeat of the new season to Lazio, led by Maurizio Sarri, who was the coach under whom Hamšík rose to prominence.

Speaking to Corriere dello Sport (via Calciomercato), Hamšík gave his thoughts on Napoli’s challenge to better the Nerazzurri this season under Rudi Garcia but did not forget two other giants.

“Inter started very well, they come from the Champions League final, so they have consistency and will try to snatch the title from Napoli. I’m not forgetting Milan and Juventus though. Napoli’s team values are known, Garcia has strong men – Osi and Kvara have been the main men, but the others are also equipped as well.”

He then praised Sarri for improving Napoli from the 2015/16 season onwards.

“He was very demanding. He told us many things, sometimes I even asked myself: Why? What are they for? He filled our heads, if I can use a phrase that can convey the concept well. He was probably right.”

Hamšík hung his boots at Trabzonspor at the end of last season after registering 121 goals in 520 appearances – the most by a player – for Napoli for the better part of last decade.
