Napoli Keenly Watching Blossoming of Lecce Midfielder

Joan Gonzalez has been one of the early revelations of the season and has started to draw the attention of bigger clubs, in particular Napoli. The 20-year-old has been a regular over veteran teammates after getting the promotion from Lecce’s Primavera side in the summer.

As Il Mattino reports, the Azzurri are keeping tabs on the Spaniard. He impressed them during the recent game against the Salentini. The 20-year-old has scored one goal in seven matches. He grew up in Cornellà’s youth system and spent two seasons at Barcelona before moving to Italy on a free transfer.

Lecce sporting director Pantaleo Corvino was quizzed about Napoli monitoring Gonzalez by Radio Kiss Kiss.

“Cristiano Giuntoli is similar to me in the sense that he comes from the sidewalk of football, metaphorically speaking. He’s very attentive and capable executive that bets on potential. I believe many teams could be interested in our youngster. Personally, I would like it if another southern club signed him. He is being tracked by multiple outfits, like a few other of our players.”

Our Take on Napoli Eyeing Gonzalez

The early success of the Partenopei, where pretty much everything has worked out, has hidden the fact that they don’t have a lot of depth, especially in the midfield. With Diego Demme on the mend for a while, Tanguy Ndombélé has been their only backup. They risk running their starters into the ground in terms of playing time. The Italo-German will be back shortly, but he can play effectively just in Stanislav Lobotka’s role. Adding another energetic guy in January would allow them to rotate more. Plus, it would probably take just a small investment to acquire the Lecce starlet.
