Napoli Tie Loyal Servant Down to New Deal

Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo has pledged his long-term future to the Diego Maradona Stadium off the back of a historic season. The newly-crowned Serie A champions have announced the extension of the 29-year-old’s contract until 2028.

It’s been four years since Di Lorenzo anonymously touched down in Naples after two years at Empoli. Little did he know he would be the one to hoist the long-awaited Scudetto less than half a decade on. Inspired by the tactical mastermind Luciano Spalletti, Napoli halted a three-decade title wait last season.

Di Lorenzo had the honor of lifting the trophy at the podium. Only a couple of months later, Napoli have rewarded their loyal servant with a new contract. It’s hardly a surprise, considering the Italian right-back was one of the most influential figures during the title-winning 2022/23 season.

He only missed one of 38 league matches last season, netting three goals and adding four assists. His long-range screamer in a 3-1 thumping of Inter toward the final stretch of 2022/23 was worthy of a Puskas Award nominee.

But while he’ll likely miss out on their prize, Napoli have given the best possible recognition. In these uncertain times, highlighted by constant rumors linking Victor Osimhen with an exit, Rudi Garcia’s men have shown Di Lorenzo their gratitude in the only appropriate manner.

During his four-year spell at Napoli, the attacking-minded right-back has collected 176 appearances, tallying 15 goals and 23 assists. Not bad for a defender.
