On This Day – December 30, 1979: Pescara Beat Milan for the First Time

On December 30, 1979, Pescara welcomed Milan at the Stadio Adriatico for what would turn out to be a historical match for the home side. It was the day when the Biancazzurri beat the Rossoneri for the first time.

The Dolphins were in the middle of their second top-flight campaign ever, having tasted Serie A football for the first time in the 1977/78 season. They were promptly relegated but found a way back to the elite division the following season.

Pescara had lost to Milan twice during their maiden Serie A campaign. When they welcomed the Rossoneri back two years later, things were not looking good for coach Gustavo Giagnoni’s side, who were bottom-ranked in the table having collected only one win, five draws, and seven losses so far.

However, Pescara somehow pulled off the upset of the day as they beat Milan 2-1. Midfielder Giordano Cinquetti and defender Giacomo Chinellato found the net for the Dolphins, while Valeriano Prestanti’s own goal gave a temporary equalizer to a Milan side whose most remarkable names were veteran goalkeeper Ricky Albertosi and 19-year-old defender Franco Baresi.

The season ended dreadfully for both clubs as Pescara didn’t manage to move from the last spot in the table. Milan were also demoted despite ending third in the table as they were relegated alongside Lazio for their involvement in the betting scandal known as the Totonero.

And so, the two sides faced each other again in Serie B the following season. Pescara beat Milan one more time at the Stadio Adriatico in the last match day but that turned to be the last time that the Abruzzesi had the upper hand over the Rossoneri to date.
