Arsenal and Roma could reportedly go head-to-head for the signing of sought-after Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar this summer. As per Calciomercato, Jose Mourinho’s men have joined the race to wrap up the Frenchman’s signature.
The Italians have already captured the services of Nemanja Matic on a free transfer. The veteran midfielder will officially become a new Roma player once his deal at Old Trafford expires later this month.
However, Mourinho is in the market for another midfield addition. After guiding Roma to a historic Europa Conference League triumph last season, the ‘Special One’ looks to challenge higher up the Serie A table next term.
Roma finished sixth in Serie A last season, seven points adrift of fourth-placed Juventus. Mourinho now hopes to close the gap by adding that extra bit of quality to his midfield department.
Jordan Veretout has been the midfield linchpin at the Stadio Olimpico after coming in from Fiorentina. However, the Frenchman was no a downward spiral last season. He even lost his place in Mourinho’s starting line-up following a noticeable dip in form.
Roma now hope to beat Arsenal to Aouar’s signing to bolster their ranks. The Gunners are one of the 23-year-old’s long-term admirers. They tried to prise him out of Lyon last summer but to no avail.
A lack of determination could backfire on Mikel Arteta’s side. Roma are giving serious thought to launching a substantial bid to lure Aouar away from Ligue 1.
Mourinho is known for his persistence in the transfer market. So no one can put it past Roma to outbid Arsenal for Aouar. But watch out for Juventus, who were on the midfielder’s tail last summer.
Our take on Roma’s interest in Aouar
Aouar is a technically gifted midfielder. Known for his vision, slick passing and playmaking skills, the Lyon star carries a reputation as one of Europe’s finest midfield talents.
The Frenchman is younger than Veretout and would offer a substantial resale value. With Matic behind to have his back and Lorenzo Pellegrini next to him, Aouar could blossom in Rome. So his potential switch to Roma makes every sense.
