Roma Star Could Move to Premier League in January

Roma star Jordan Veretout could continue his career in the Premier League, with Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur ready to go head-to-head for his signature. Both sides are reportedly plotting January bids for the French midfielder, while the Giallorossi hope to retain their first-team star.

As per Foot Mercato, the Magpies are ready to put together a substantial offer to tempt Roma into selling Veretout in January. The wealthy new owners could make Newcastle one of the protagonists of the winter transfer window as part of their bid to fight Premier League salvation in the second half of the season.

Eddie Howe’s men currently languish in 19th in the Premier League table after winning just one of their 19 league fixtures this season. But despite their thoroughly disappointing first half of the season, the St James’ Park outfit are still within touching distance of safety, trailing 17th-placed Watford by a mere two points.

Newcastle will hope to improve in 2022, and landing a creative midfielder to address their problems in the center of the park is a priority. It appears the Tynesiders hold Veretout in high esteem and are aiming to make him one of their first signings under the new ownership.

However, they will have to beat Tottenham to the 28-year-old’s signature. Spurs are in the market for a new midfielder as they look to step up their pursuit of the Premier League top-four spots in the remainder of the season. New head coach Antonio Conte is said to be an admirer of Veretout and is willing to make him his first signing in London.

Veretout has gone from strength to strength since swapping Fiorentina for Roma in 2020, growing into one of the finest midfielders in Serie A. He has been vital to Jose Mourinho’s tactical set-up this season. And the Portuguese manager is likely to fight tooth and nail to fend off foreign suitors.
