San Siro won’t host the 2027 Champions League due to the uncertainty related to the future of the stadium. UEFA had initially assigned it to Milan but with a caveat. The two local teams are pondering building a new arena, while the City is pushing to renovate the current one.
According to Corriere della Sera, the nail in the coffin of the candidacy was a letter by the Mayor to the FIGC, the Italian FA, suggesting that he couldn’t guarantee what would happen in 2027 at this stage. It was a required procedure as per the indications of the international federation.
FIGC head Gianluca Gravina will propose Rome’s Stadio Olimpico as a fallback for San Siro. It’s the only other Italian stadium where a Champions League final can realistically take place given the mandatory 50k capacity. The others above such as a threshold are Bari’s San Nicola and Napoli’s Diego Armando Maradona, which are quite run down. Turin’s Allianz Stadium is suitable just for the Europa League final and did it in 2014.
Sports secretary Andrea Abodi commented.
“We expected this decision because it’s foreseeable that San Siro will undergo a significant renovation after the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics. On the other hand, it remains a center-piece for Euro 2032 in our mind.”
Milan and Inter have recently rejected the WeBuild’s project to modernize the arena with a relatively minor impact on matches. The decision isn’t final though. Both sides are working on different locations, but could also team up in one or buy the Giuseppe Meazza, which might be torn down if it became private. There’s also a push to erect a new stadium near the current one.
