Perennial Serie A underachievers Torino are reportedly on the cusp of signing left-wingback Borna Sosa from Ajax. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Croatia international will be in Turin today for medical before completing his loan switch from Amsterdam.
Torino won’t fork out a significant loan fee to land the 26-year-old. But Paolo Vanoli’s team will need to spend €7 million if they opt for a permanent deal next summer. Sosa’s arrival addresses a crucial shortcoming in Vanoli’s squad.
Experienced Swiss international Ricardo Rodriguez was irreplaceable in this position for years. However, he left Torino at the end of last season upon the expiry of his contract. Rodriguez’s departure left the Granata with a significant void to fill.
Union Berlin star Robin Gosens was the club’s priority until not long ago. However, the German defender’s reluctance to accept a contract proposal made Torino look for alternatives. As a result, Sosa will continue his career in Serie A following an underwhelming maiden season in the Eredivisie.
Sosa joined Ajax last summer after a five-year stint in the Bundesliga with VfB Stuttgart. But his brief spell at the Johan Cruijff ArenA failed to live up to the billing. After making just featuring for 26 minutes across the final nine games of the 2023/24 season, he’s moving to Torino.
Though he could become the new Torino player by the end of the day, Sosa will unlikely be part of Vanoli’s matchday squad for a curtain-raising league clash against Milan on Saturday evening.
