Ivan Juric reportedly first set sights on the Benfica youth product, who had only recently put an extension to paper with the Guimaraes outfit. However, Torino’s interest in Varela wasn’t new, given that they had already expressed heed last calendar year during the transfer season.

His boyhood club Benfica also put forth resources to enquire about the keeper’s availability over the summer window, but Varela decided against a move, given his strong intention to win a trophy for Vitoria. Reportedly, he also made a promise to his son not to change schools.
Even if Torino were in the running, it is unlikely Varela would have chosen Turin as his next destination, given his strong ties in Portugal and with Benfica. His close friend and Benfica playmaker David Neres is said to be the Vitoria captain’s strongest ally
Torino are expected to make another attempt to sign the 28-year-old, who is rooted to Guimaraes until June 2026.
