Inter Strike Deal to Re-Up Contract of Veteran Defender

Inter and Mattia Darmian have agreed to add a year to his contract, which now runs until 2024. The versatile defender has been at the club since 2020, initially on loan, and was eventually bought out for €3.3M from Parma. He has accumulated 91 appearances since joining, logging 8 goals, including the one that allowed the Nerazzurri to eliminate Atalanta in the Round of Eight of Coppa Italia, and 9 assists.

The Italian international commented on the renewal on the club’s TV (via Ansa)

“I’m very proud of it. It pushes me to do even better and work harder. I hope to continue faring well and take home many more trophies with these colors. We have already won four. I’ll give my whole until I’m here. I try to practice hard every day to improve and put the coach in a difficult spot when he has to make lineup choices.”

“When I’m called upon, I try to do my best to help the team. Scoring is always pleasing, especially when it leads to victories or advancing. I hope to net some more goals, although the most important thing is for the side achieve its objectives.”

According to Calcio e Finanza, Darmian will earn €2.5M net after the extension. The new contract envisages an option to prolong it for another year. Since Denzel Dumfries hasn’t been 100 percent after the World Cup and was also involved in transfer market rumors, the 33-year-old has drawn the nod in the last eight matches, more than holding his own either on the flank or in the back three.
