Romagnoli Exalts Nesta as the Greatest Italian Stopper

Reigning Scudetto winner Alessio Romagnoli has labeled Italy’s great Alessandro Nesta as the greatest defender the country has produced in history. They have both starred for Lazio and Milan in their careers, and the current Biancocelesti defender thinks the 2006 World Cup winner’s stature remains unmatched.

During an event in Rome, Romagnoli took the opportunity to speak about Nesta, who he considers to be the greatest ever.

“Nesta is incomparable and no one will be like him. Other defenders and I can’t be compared to him, because we are all different. He was who he was, and for me he was the greatest Italian defender in history. Analogies should not be made especially now.” (via LazioNews24)

Romagnoli jumped onboard Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio ship at the start of the season from Milan and has since played a key role in their rise to second position in Serie A. The Roma youth product has himself been regarded by some as one of the most promising defenders of this generation. Nesta finished his career with 624 club career appearances, with an additional 78 arriving in the Azzurri colors.
