Zhang Not Selling Inter, Club Legend Joins Management

Amid a challenging financial situation, Steven Zhang has been routinely touted to sell Inter, but nothing is imminent on that front. There have not been recent inklings in such direction. The brass of the team is currently operating on medium-term projects, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.

The Nerazzurri will continue to thread the needle of trying to be successful while being financially sustainable. They will keep self-financing through occasional major sales and look to re-invest cunningly. Ownership aims to limit the payroll to 15 percent of the total costs.

Zhang and the Suning conglomerate have poured in €680M in Inter from 2016 to 2021 before being forced to change their strategy over a mandate from the Chinese government. The club is currently leaning on a €240M loan from the Oaktree fund. It will be paid back in 2024, which will be the next turning point in the future of the club.

In the meantime, the Nerazzurri have brought back Riccardo Ferri to serve as the new club manager. The role had been vacant ever since Gabriele Oriali left nearly a year ago. He has accumulated nearly 300 appearances from 1981 to 1994, winning one Scudetto, one Coppa Italia and two UEFA Cups. The former defender previously served as the head of the Inter Academy Florida and briefly led Vicenza’s technical area. He has been a pundit for multiple TV channels in recent years.

Ferri spoke with the publication:

“I am living a dream. I’m proud to return to help out the team. The spirit is the same I had when first I joined as a little kid: humility, determination, politeness, and attachment to these colors. I want to enjoy every second and be productive.”
