Despite agreeing to a new contract with Milan last summer, it’s not a guarantee Zlatan Ibrahimovic will continue playing. The striker is rehabbing from a major knee injury and is targeting late January for his return. On the other hand, if things don’t go as expected, he could decide to retire, Prime Video’s journalist Alessandro Alciato reports (via SportMediaset).
December will be the key month for the future of the Swedish veteran. The star had surgery to reconstruct the ACL back in late May, with a six-to-seven months timetable. While occasionally missing matches, he played through the problem down the stretch last season.
Ibrahimovic will assess how the recovery is going later this year. If he realizes it’ll take more time than anticipated, he will hang his cleats. The 41-year-old signed a seasonal deal with Milan, and his salary dropped from €7M to €1M. The agreement contains bonuses and add-ons tied to his performances and personal and team achievements.
The ace recently visited former Rossoneri owner and current Monza one, Silvio Berlusconi, and tweeted: “History doesn’t get canceled, and the future has yet to be written,” afterward. Before re-upping with the Scudetto winners, he was linked to a possible role in the agency of the late Mino Raiola. In addition, Milan would be keen on onboarding him as an executive.

Our Take on Ibrahimovic
Lesser players would have already thrown in the towel. Winning a somewhat unexpected title, and suffering a massive injury, would have been a very honorable way to go out. But he’s no ordinary man. He surely likes a challenge, but, especially at his age, such injury could take up to a year to heal fully.
