Sassuolo CEO Carnevali Describes Frattesi Talks with Roma

Sassuolo chief Giovanni Carnevali has taken stock of Roma failing to bring back midfield prodigy Davide Frattesi this summer. The Giallorossi youth product was frequently linked with a return to his boyhood club, but negotiations never materialized between the two parties.

In an interview with Corriere dello Sport on deadline day, Carnevali commented on the move that didn’t go through.

“We talked about it with Tiago Pinto at the beginning of the transfer market. But I don’t know to what extent the Giallorossi were really interested in buying him.”

Further adding, he admitted Frattesi himself was keen on transferring to Roma.

“There was the desire on the part of the footballer. We gave our valuation, also considering the fact that the counterpart held a 30 percent sell-on clause on him. He has an important price tag for us.”

Both parties were eventually drawn out due to a financial disagreement, with the club chief stating that Roma’s interest was perhaps blown out of proportion.

“We weren’t able to strike a deal, but Roma probably didn’t have all this impetus in closing the deal. And we are happy, because we didn’t want to sell him in the end.”

22-year-old Frattesi moved to Sassuolo in 2017/18, before being sent out to Ascoli, Empoli and Monza on successive loan spells. He rose drastically last season in 2021/22, appearing 38 times for the Neroverdi and scoring 4 goals in the process.
